Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In Fremont, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across California run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.

Mylapore is a great local chain for an authentic Tamil/South Indian vegetarian experience. We visited for Sunday lunch, and as expected, it was quite crowded. We had joined the waitlist, and although we arrived a few minutes late and lost our table, the staff was kind enough to seat us at another table within about five minutes. I had the traditional vegetarian Tamil-style thali, which came with a wonderful assortment of vegetable preparations, sambar, rasam, and other accompaniments with rice. The portions are small but plentiful, and the flavors are very satisfying if you enjoy classic South Indian seasoning. My friend had the ghee podi dosa, which was crisp, flavorful, and served with excellent sambar and chutneys. We finished with their authentic South Indian filter coffeeβstrong, aromatic, and made with coffee and chicory. I highly recommend having it with a little jaggery, even if you normally take your coffee without sugar. Overall, a very wholesome and authentic South Indian vegetarian experience. Definitely worth a visit if you love Tamil-style food, dosa, thali, and filter coffee!

Pooran Polo is a solid spot for authentic Maharashtra cuisine. The OG recipes Sabudana Vada, Vada Pav, Misal Pav, and Pooran Poli are all delicious and taste just like home. Stick to those classics, the naan was dry and hard (probably from frozen), and the kadhai paneer had rock-hard paneer cubes. Overall, great for the real Maharashtrian flavors.

βββββ Mylapore Express in Fremont has been our familyβs culinary sanctuary since day one! Whether itβs a standard Tuesday dinner, hosting out-of-town relatives, or introducing my non-Indian colleagues to the "real deal," this is the spot. Iβve made it my personal mission to show my coworkers that Indian food is so much more than just naan and butter chickenβSouth Indian cuisine is a vibrant, flavorful universe of its own, and Mylapore Express is the perfect ambassador with its authentic Madras filter coffee and incredible ambiance. We canβt get enough of the sambar rice, yogurt rice, and the Madras Beach Sundal (a recent discovery that we now crave!). The quality is reliable, the staff is genuinely helpful, and the decorations provide a lovely cultural touch. My only "complaint"? The food is so delicious that I shamelessly abandon my diet every single time. Itβs a carb-heavy paradise, but Iβd love to see a few more protein-packed or fiber-rich options so I can pretend Iβm being healthy while I devour my third dosa! Thank you for bringing such authentic flavors to our neighborhoodβmy taste buds are grateful, even if my gym trainer isnβt!

We had Masala Dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa, and Onion Uttapam. The Masala Dosa was perfectly crisp and served with flavorful chutneys and sambar. The Mysore Masala Dosa had just the right amount of spice and Onion Uttapam was soft and delicious. A great place for authentic South Indian food. One of the best places to enjoy dosa and uttapam. Highly recommended! π

I had Ghee Masala Dosa and Filter coffee and Mylapore, both were good. The masala dosa was a bit more crunchier than I usually like, it was tasty and I enjoyed it nevertheless. The coffee was also good.
